Since I was so high-risk, I was seeing the doctor several times a week, and I remember them telling me that my son was going to be born a month early with a C-section. When I told my boss I was giving birth, they laid me off almost instantly. And from that experience I learned just how deeply I didn’t want to ever work for another person again. I didn't want anyone to have the power to do that to me again, especially people who think that they're good people but they're just not.
After I gave birth, I took some time to just heal my body and heal my mind for a few months, and it was my husband that suggested that I start taking some social media clients. And honestly, I was mad at the suggestion. Yeah I wanted to do that, but I just didn’t want to be told, okay?
But, I did start by just starting an account that was totally private, no one could access it, but it was great practice on just how to show up on my stories and for potential clients. And I remember that this really helped move my mindset and help me feel like this was really possible and doable.
I filed for my LLC a few months later, and I just want to throw it out there- I think it took me about $1,500 to get my business originally set up. People aren't always upfront about these numbers, but that startup cost is just part of the deal to get your bank set up, make my business legit, the LLC, and getting myself a real website.
I remember I took some time getting my business fully up and running. And I decided to launch December 1. I wanted my business to be a little Sagittarius baby like me! And, you’re never gonna be fully ready- you’re just not. But I started, and it went great! I had so many friends share my business when I first launched and found clients just that week.
And I’m gonna be real with you, I really didn’t fully know what I was offering yet- but I figured it out! It was exciting to figure out, even if it was challenging and I didn't always know what I was doing.
That first year having a new business is really just figuring stuff out, you're figuring out what you offer, how to pay taxes, all of the nitty gritty details about your business and how you operate. so the second year was way more fun and creative and just more about the excitement and the passion behind my business. That first year let me figure myself out, and the second year really let me come into the kind of business that I really want to be.
And this business has been so amazing! I noticed I was making as much or more than I was in corporate, even while working way less and having way less stress. It took the second year to really find what's the best capacity for me as far as clients. I found my full-time roster, where I personally like to have about seven to eight clients. It was fun and eye-opening to discover what that capacity really is.
When you're building your business, really the slow game is way better and healthier than the fast game. Slowly learning and connecting with clients and growing from there is just way more sustainable and way more fun honestly. You get to build things over time, come into your own ideas, and it's just a lot more healthy and exciting to let things build slowly rather than rushing them.
I know that there's so many clean and quick and fast business starting stories out there, so I really wanted to share mine in all its messiness and details, so you can see what this process really can be like. Starting The Space Social has completely changed my life in every imaginable way, and it was so worth the guts to just get started and the decisions that I made along the way. I hope that this inspires you to just start, whatever that looks like for you. it's always okay if things build slowly, I'm a big believer that it's actually a healthier way than trying to hustle and grind yourself to death. Let things build slowly and steady, take time to practice and get set, and then go! You may never feel fully ready, but don't be afraid to just start.
